Sensory-Friendly Festive Season Tips

The festive season can be magical — but it can also be a lot for children, especially those who are neurodivergent or sensitive to sensory input. Bright lights, busy shops, loud gatherings, different foods and unpredictable routines can quickly become overwhelming.

Here are a few sensory-friendly strategies to help your child enjoy the holidays at their own pace:

  • Give them permission to opt out of hugs, photos or activities that feel uncomfortable.
  • Create a sensory toolkit (noise-reducing headphones, fidgets, chewables, sunglasses, weighted lap pad).
  • Build in quiet breaks — even a short walk or sitting in the car can reset their nervous system.
  • Prepare them ahead of time by explaining what to expect.
  • Offer grounding routines before and after events.

It’s perfectly okay if your child’s festive season looks different to others’. Comfort and regulation come first.
