What does therapy look like for a young child? 🌱

When we think about psychology, we might imagine sitting in a room talking about our feelings. For young children, therapy can look quite different.

Therapy with young children is usually active, practical and guided by their interests. We might use play, drawing, stories, games or other activities to help children explore their feelings and learn new skills.

Depending on what your child needs, therapy might focus on things such as:

💛 Understanding and identifying emotions
💛 Learning calming and self-regulation strategies
💛 Coping with worries and anxiety
💛 Problem-solving
💛 Communication
💛 Managing frustration
💛 Developing flexibility when things don’t go as planned

The aim isn’t to expect a young child to simply “behave better” or stop having big feelings.

Instead, we work together to help children understand what is happening for them and gradually develop the skills they need to manage those feelings and situations more successfully.

And importantly, parents and carers are part of this process too.
