As we reach the end of the school year, many families notice a big shift in their children’s behaviour. Even the most easy-going kids can become more tearful, irritable, clingy or “out of sorts.” This is incredibly common — and often a sign of end-of-year fatigue.
Children have spent months using enormous amounts of mental, emotional and social energy. They’ve learned new routines, made new friendships, managed challenges, sat through noisy classrooms and pushed themselves right to the finish line. By December, their “battery” is running low.
A few things can help:
- Slow things down where possible – quieter mornings or earlier nights can make a world of difference.
- Keep expectations realistic – children may not cope as well with crowded events or big changes.
- Look after the basics – regular food, hydration, rest and connection support regulation.
- Offer predictability – letting them know what’s coming reduces stress.
Most importantly, remember: these behaviours are signs of tiredness, not “naughtiness.” With patience, rest and a gentler pace, children usually bounce back beautifully.
